  9. To Install ChemWindow Using Windows 3.x:
  10. -------------------------------------------------
  11. 1. From inside Windows 3.x, open the File Manager.
  12. 2. Create a directory on the hard disk called "CW"
  13. 3. Place the ChemWindow diskette in the exterior drive.
  14. 4. Drag the "CW.EXE" file from the exterior drive directory
  15.     to the new CW directory on your hard drive.
  16. 5. Close File Manager and open Program Manager.
  17. 6. Select New from the File menu to create an icon.
  18. 7. Enter "ChemWindow" for the description and the path name
  19.     for the command line. (Example: C\:CW\CW.EXE)
  20. 8. Double click the ChemWindow icon to start.

  23. To Install ChemWindow Using Windows 2.x:
  24. --------------------------------------------------------
  25. 1. At the DOS prompt, enter "MD CW".
  26. 2. Go to new directory by entering "CD CW" at the DOS prompt.
  27. 3. Place ChemWindow into floppy drive, we'll call it Drive A.
  28. 4. Copy ChemWindow to hard disk by entering, "COPY A:CW.EXE".
  29. 5. Enter "WIN CW" to run ChemWindow.

  31. To Install ChemWindow Using the Windows 2 Runtime:
  32. ________________________________________________________
  33. CAUTION: THIS PROCEDURE IS FOR USERS THAT DO NOT HAVE WINDOWS ON
  34. THEIR COMPUTER.  THE RUNTIME IS ONLY PROVIDED TO THOSE THAT HAVE
  35. PURCHASED CHEMWINDOW.  THE DEMO VERSION DOES NOT INCLUDE THE
  36. RUNTIME.  TO INSTALL THE DEMO VERSION, YOU MUST HAVE WINDOWS ON
  37. YOUR COMPUTER.

  39. 1. Insert the Setup Disk into floppy drive, we'll call it Drive A.
  40. 2. Go to floppy drive by entering, "A:".
  41. 3. Start installation by typing, "SETUP".
  42. 4. The computer will instruct you on how to complete the installation.

  44. Fonts, Windows and ChemWindow
  45. ----------------------------------------------
  46. In the Windows environment, you have fonts for your screen and others for the
  47. printer.  ChemWindow displays all fonts supported by your printer in the Font
  48. menu.  This includes fonts that are permanently stored in your printer,
  49. cartridge fonts, or "Soft" fonts that are sent by your computer to the printer.
  50. The font sizes enabled in the "Size" menu are those supported by your
  51. printer for the currently selected font.  When you use fonts in a document, the
  52. text displayed on your screen will use a screen font.  Windows will use a
  53. font that is as close in appearance as possible to the selected printer font.
  54. You may have to purchase fonts to get the screen display of text to match the
  55. document better.  Adobe sells screen fonts that corresponds to those found in
  56. Postscript printers.  Bitstream (800-522-3668) sells "Soft" fonts that support
  57. the HP LaserJet printers and the screen.  If you're going to use Windows 3.0,
  58. verify with the vendor that their fonts are compatible with 3.0 before
  59. ordering.  Windows 3.0 contains a font with greek symbols (Symbol) for the
  60. screen.  This font cannot be used for the LaserJet printer.  If you have
  61. Windows 3, the best way to obtain good quality scaleable fonts for the screen
  62. and printer is to purchase Adobe Type Manager.  The Courier, Helvetica, Times,
  63. and Symbol fonts are included when you buy Adobe Type Manager.

  66. New features in ChemWindow version 1.34
  67. --------------------------------------
  68. Version 1.34 represents the fourth upgrade in ChemWindow since its first 
  69. introduction in August of 1989.  This new version fixes a number of recently 
  70. discovered bugs and makes a few needed modifications.  Version 1.34 adds two 
  71. new tools to your drawing palette─a chair ring of the opposite orientation to
  72. the existing chair and a Benzene ring in the Kékule form.  Both rings were
  73. attainable in previous versions, but convenience dictated they be made more
  74. accessible.

  76. You will also notice in your version 1.34 that the dialog boxes for the on-line 
  77. help command have been rewritten to better explain drawing tools.
  78.  
  79. The default directory for saving documents can be set in the WIN.INI file.
  80. WIN.INI is found in your Windows directory.  Edit it with NOTEPAD or any
  81. other text editor after running ChemWindow once.  Find the section starting
  82. with "[ssCt]".  Insert the line DIR="PATH", where PATH is the path for the
  83. default directory.  For example, if you want all ChemWindow documents to be
  84. saved in C:\CW, your WIN.INI file will look like this:

  91. Other features not included in the manual.
  92. --------------------------------------
  93. "Breaking" bonds that cross.  Crossing bonds, as in norbornane, are
  94. broken automatically to give a three dimensional effect.  Clicking the
  95. hit box for a bond will bring the bond to the front.  It may be necessary
  96. to click more than once if the click changes the bond type, too.
  97.  
  98. Postscript files.  The Save dialog box includes a new radio button for EPS
  99. files.  Microsoft Word, Word Perfect, PageMaker, and many other programs
  100. import this graphics format.  When used with the required Postscript printer,
  101. publication quality documents will be produced.  Select the Postscript
  102. print driver when creating Postscript files.  At the present time, the
  103. fonts supported are Avant Garde, Bookman, Courier, Helvetica-Narrow,
  104. Helvetica, New Century Schoolbook, Palatino, Symbol, Times Roman, 
  105. Zapf Chancery, and Zapf Dingbats.

  107. Control Panel.  The Microsoft Windows Control Panel application lets you
  108. change fonts, printers, and the Windows environment.  It can be started
  109. with the "Control Panel" command in the "File" menu.  Its use is generally
  110. self-explanatory.  Users that do not have Windows may need to change
  111. printers or the communication port settings with the "Connections", 
  112. "Printers", and "Communications Port" commands in the "Setup" menu.  You
  113. can also add new printers with the "Add New Printer" command in the 
  114. "Installation" menu (the drivers for printers are on the Windows disks).
  115.  
  116. Creating HPGL files.  HPGL files can be imported into Microsoft Word and many
  117. other programs.  Create them by following these steps.  Add the line
  118. "OUTPUT.PRN=" with any editor to the "[ports]" section of the "WIN.INI" file
  119. (it is in the Windows or ChemWindow directory).  Install the HP Plotter
  120. Driver (HPPLOT.DRV on Utilities 1 disk) with the "Add New Printer" command
  121. in the "Installation" menu of Control Panel.  Use the "Connections" command
  122. in the "Setup" menu of Control Panel to set the port for the HP Plotter to
  123. "OUTPUT.PRN=".  Use the "Printer" command in the "Setup" menu of Control
  124. Panel to select the HP Plotter as the currently active printer.  Set the
  125. line thickness for bonds and arcs to 1/4 point with ChemWindow's "Customize"
  126. command in the "Options" menu.  Draw the structure.  Print the document with
  127. the "Print" command in ChemWindow's "File" menu.  An HPGL file is "printed"
  128. to the disk file: "OUTPUT.PRN".  This file can be renamed, if desired, and
  129. imported into Microsoft Word.  After importing the graphic into Word or
  130. another program, it might be rotated by 90 degrees.  If this is the case,
  131. you can change between "Landscape" and "Portrait" page orientations with
  132. the "Page Setup" command in ChemWindow's "File" menu to correct the
  133. orientation.  The Microsoft Word documentation recommends that the Plotter
  134. device be a "ColorPro".  Select "ColorPro" in the "Device" menu of the
  135. "Page Setup" dialog box for best support with Microsoft Word.

  137. Show Clipboard.  The "Show Clipboard" command in the "Edit" menu displays
  138. the contents of the Windows Clipboard.

  140. Symbol Font Name.  The name of the font with Greek symbols, if any, should
  141. be entered in the text edit panel within the Customize dialog box.  The
  142. default name is "Symbol".
  143.  
  144. Style Menu.  This now appears as two menus, Size and Style.
  145.  
  146. Font Menu.  The "Fonts..." command allows you to choose from the entire list
  147. of available fonts.  The rest of the menu displays the 10 most frequently
  148. used fonts.
